1965 Nissan Silvia (CSP311)

What we have here is a very rare and significant part of Nissan's rich history and the beginning of a 37 year successful run of the ever popular S-chassis.

This particular Silvia is a 1965 model year, one of only 554 ever produced.  Due to the low production volume, Nissan employed the expertise of Yamaha to aid in the production of the chassis which were all hand-built and the body panels were formed over wooden bucks which as a result, no two chassis were ever exactly the same.

Styling of the body should be credited to Kazuo Kimura although Count Albrecht Goertz did aid in some of the final design elements as well a employing the first 1:1 full-scale clay models of which molds could be taken from for production purposes.  Due to the tedious production methods and high level of fit and finish designed into these vehicles, the Silvia was priced more than double the cost of the next model in Nissan's lineup at the time.

The CSP311 Silvia was a bespoke body and interior built on the foundation of the SP310 Fairlady Roadster, but instead of utilizing the 1500cc engine, the Silvia received the later and more powerful SP311 1595cc with twin 38mm Hitachi SU carburetors from the 1600 Roadster as well as the front disc brakes although the Silvia received an upgraded transmission and shorter final drive ratio to aid in acceleration from the slightly heavier chassis compared to the roadster although the Silvia still weighs in at scant 997 kg (2154 lbs.)
